June 2026 online meeting - Discussion of Royal Society Science for Society report
The Royal Society has just released its Science for society report on public engagement in science research, a follow-up to the 1985 report, The public understanding of science (often referred to as the "Bodmer report"). Our next meeting will be dedicated to discussing the report and its conclusions - taking place on Zoom on the 24th June at 1pm.
The 1985 report led to a range of changes from the establishment of the Faraday lectures and National Science week, to research councils being required to fund public understanding of science. So we are curious to see what this report will lead to!
Science for Society is an incredibly rich document, divided into sections for researchers, public engagement professionals, education workers, private companies and the third sector and with over a dozen case studies. It is also accompanied by a study on the factors affecting public engagement by UK researchers. However, if you do not have time to read any of the report, please still join the meeting, as we will summarise some of the key conclusions and there will be a lively discussion about how this affects the different areas covered by the Mathsci-Comm Network. We look forward to hearing from everyone.
If you are interested in reading one of these sections and giving a brief overview of that section to the meeting, to aid discussion, please do contact Rachel or Marianne.
To join this event you need to join the Network.
